Fembruary: Betty, Space Heroine

I've owned Betty since 2019 and totally forgot to paint her for last year's Fembruary so she was a must for this time around. She's a cool mini with lots of... er... character.

Much like Astrid, she was very straightforward once I'd picked the colours. I decided on a silver suit to go with her pulp look and 40s/50s hairstyle, so I primed her with grey spray paint and gave her a coat of Plate Metal. I washed it with thinned Nuln Oil and then highlighted it with pure Silver, trying to keep it looking like cloth and not metal. I used the same technique when I painted my Valkeeri Leader a couple of years ago.

With the silver done I picked Magic Blue for the trim and highlighted it with Electric Blue. Her hair is Calvary Brown and Wild Rider Red, which is my go-to for red hair. Betty's skin is just my own flesh mix, Reikland Fleshshade, and Basic Skin, and her lips are Purple Shadow. Amazingly I got her eyes right in one attempt, so yay!

Betty's old-school raygun is just Averland Sunset and Deep Yellow, with some thinned Sepia Wash to shade it. The end of the barrel is a bit bent but I daren't try straightening it in case it snaps off. To break up all the blue and silver I did her holster to look like leather with Chocolate and Flat Browns.

I wanted to do her base as an alien planet, and it was a doddle: just some Vallejo Black Lava texture paste, painted Violet and washed with Druchii Violet. I used Purple mixed with a touch of White to highlight it. Then I painted a couple of tufts — one Scorpy Green and Light Turquoise, the other Red and Averland Sunset — and stuck them on.

The other building is all done and I'm writing up the post, so come back soon!

  1. Excellent work Matt, the colours match the retro sculpt perfectly, and the alien base looks excellent.

  2. Wonderful paint-job, Matt. Lovely old Buck Rogers vibe to her, and that alien base you've gone for works super well.

    1. You're right, Simon, she would work really well in a Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon-type setting! Glad you like the base, I'm very happy with how it turned out.

  4. I really like the silver suit. Wish I had thought to do that on mine. What happened to the little blob guy that came with her? You lose him, or do you have other plans?

    1. Cheers, Keith, and holy shit I forgot about the little alien blob thing! I'll have to dig it up and paint it separately. The silver really suits her pulp look.

  5. You've amanged a real retro look with your great choices of colpours, including the 'plastic' ray-gun, all looking very Flash Gordonesque

    1. Thanks, Joe, and you're right about the raygun, I wanted to give it a plastic look rather than metal, which is why I avoided a metallic shade.

  6. As others have said, I think you nailed the retro vibe on this one, mate! Its a real shame they don't have enough cloth to cover women up in the future too ;D I think if I were painting this one up, I might get a complaint from my wife!

    1. Cheers, Jeff! Her costume is a bit revealing and I did wonder about painting the chest panel blue, but then I thought if she's got it she may as well flaunt it LOL!
