Monster May(hem): Hastur la vista

Of all the Cthulhu: Death May Die minis, Hastur is by far the creepiest. He was also by far the hardest one to paint.

I gave up on these guys back at the end of Monster May(hem). I couldn't get Hastur painted right, so I didn't see the point of having a go at his merry band of followers. But then I decided to try something different...

Great Obelisk of C'thulhu

In the middle of a dark, forbidding forest, a stone obelisk has stood for as long as locals can remember. They speak of it in hushed tones and outsiders are advised to keep away from it. But some adventurous types believe there is a copy of the Necronomicon on its base, and have gone in search of the obelisk to secure the tome and its powers. The forest has quietly absorbed them.

It's back to huge metal monsters today as I'm waiting on more zombies and survivors to show up in the mail for this month's double challenge of Zombtober and Apocalypse Me. So strap in and enjoy.

I have a few shreds of sanity left after Monster May(hem) and it's not like I need them, so why not?

Monster May(hem): Hastur...oh, Hastur

I think I went a monster too far. Why couldn't Robert W. Chambers have written The King In Literally Any Colour Except Yellow?

Monster May(hem): Wilbur Whateley

Imagine bumping into this in the bucolic New England countryside.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu... aw crap, I used the same first line last year. Let me come up with something else.

Monster May(hem): Fire Vampires

Finally I get to use some colour!

Monster May(hem): Yog-Sothoth

Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. 

Monster May(hem): Cthonian

There's a surprising number of creatures in the Cthulhu mythos that aren't HP Lovecraft inventions, and cthonians are one of them.

Monster May(hem): Hunting Horrors

Another pair of Cthulhu: Death May Die minis, another Lovecraft invention that has bugger all backstory.

Monster May(hem): Star Spawn

Star spawn are another creation of HP Lovecraft, although they're only briefly mentioned in the novella Beyond The Mountains of Madness. They're creatures that came to Earth millions of years ago and waged war with the Elder Things, eventually colonising the land while the Elder Things retreated to the oceans.

Monster May(hem): Ghouls and Deep Ones

Oh crap, that's Erebus and Cadbury. My bad. Then again, having been stuck at home with them 24/7 for the past year, it's an easy mistake to make.

Monster May(hem): Byakhee

As I said in my first post about Cthulhu: Death May Die, byakhee are "interstellar predators that feed on their victims". That's pretty much it; they don't have a huge backstory. About the only interesting fact is that they weren't invented by HP Lovecraft, despite appearing in one of his stories.

Monster May(hem): Shoggoth

"Formless protoplasm able to mock and reflect all forms and organs and processes — viscous agglutinations of bubbling cells — rubbery fifteen-foot spheroids infinitely plastic and ductile — slaves of suggestion, builders of cities — more and more sullen, more and more intelligent, more and more amphibious, more and more imitative! Great God! What madness made even those blasphemous Old Ones willing to use and carve such things?"

With it being Monster May(hem) — although this post isn't an entry — and with me now living only 40 miles from where one of Lovecraft's stories is set, I decided it's about time I cracked open the board game I bought back in November.

Monster May(hem): Elder Thing

Before we kick off, I just want to say that I've been looking forward to this year's Monster May(hem) for ages. I had an absolute blast last year, painting five figures over the course of the month. I chose to begin this year's challenge with an Elder Thing by RAFM. I've named him Giles.
