Zombtober: A quartet of corpses

Calvin gets ready to take out some zedheads who are stinking up the alley behind the convenience store.

Just so you're not all kept in suspense: still no sign of the Hasslefree minis so I've emailed them again. I've even gone through the undergrowth and dead leaves around the bottom of our mailbox in case the package was dropped, but no luck. So here's a short post (and there was much rejoicing) about some festering females and one mouldy male.

These three lovely ladies are from Brigade Games' Drug War Z range. There's supposed to be four, but I got sent a duplicate (the one on the right) and if there's one thing I can't stand it's duplicate figures. So I didn't paint it, which now strikes me as pretty stupid.

From left, they're painted Deep Sky Blue/Ash Grey; Deep Yellow and Violet; and Pink, Off-White and Andrea Blue. If anyone knows why Andrea Blue is called Andrea Blue, let me know in the comments.

This is Brian. I also got him from Brigade Games, and his actual name is Brian the Zombie. I painted him pretty much how he's painted on Brigade's site, with a Red hoodie and Blue-Grey jeans. Part of his skull is showing through his face, so that got a dab of Bonewhite and some Sepia Wash, as did the bit of humerus sticking out of his shredded arm.

Brian has a small integral base (AAARRRGHHH) so I stuck him to the plastic Reaper base and had to build up the modelling paste around him. That's why, like Roberto, he doesn't have a stripe on his base.

As per usual they were straightforward to paint. All the skin was done first with Dead Flesh, then mottled with Green Tone and Druchii Violet. Once that was dried it was just a case of picking colours for their clothes and painting, shading and highlighting them in turn instead of doing them one at a time.

So that's me out of zombies again. With no sign of the survivors I guess I'm going to have to get on with the Apocalypse Me scenery piece I've been avoiding for a week.

Some more sad news: my bottle of Vallejo Black Wash ran out today, so I'm either going to have to order some more from Amazon or pop to Bennington and shell out for Citadel's equivalent. Does Citadel even make washes any more?

  1. Great work on the zombies Matt, loads of character in the painting, sorry the hasslefree is still a no show, and look forward to seeing the scenery.
GW still do washes, you want Nuln Oil, and make sure to get the matt, not gloss

    1. Thanks, Dave, and thanks for the Nuln Oil hint. I'll try to get some today or tomorrow.

  2. Great quartet of Zom's mate, though I like Brian the best (which is different for me as i usually go for the girls 😉), He reminds me of someone, it's his face, but I just can't quite put my finger on who..

Well that will annoy me now, thanks! 🤔

    Cheers Roger.

    1. I just realised that Brian would be the perfect mini to use as a zombified me... all he'd need would be a cap and dog leash and maybe some extra padding around the middle LOL! I'm now slightly tempted to strip his paint and redo him.

  3. Dave's spot-on with the Nuln Oil suggestion. That is what I use as well. Just be careful not to knock it over. I've done that a couple of times, unfortunately. The latest zombies look great and I do hope you get your order soon. Our postal system used to be so much better than its been. Its sad to see and frustrating when it affects you as well.

    1. Ironically the Hasslefree minis showed up this afternoon LOL! I'm going to pick up some Nuln Oil, and I'm well aware of knocking over Citadel pots as I almost sent my open pot of Druchii Violet flying while shading these zombies. Why they haven't switched to dropper bottles like the rest of civilized society is beyond me.

  4. Once again, some fab Zombies Matt, keep 'em coming.
Nuln Oil, definitely. I started with Vallejo Washes but changed to GW's, they're so much better... other than the stupid pots, that is!

    1. People, myself and friends included, were complaining about Citadel's crappy pots back in the late 80s. I cannot understand why they've never switched to dropper bottles, especially as Reaper, Vallejo and Army Painter use them. I've even seen people online decant Citadel paints into cleaned out dropper bottles, something I might do with the washes.

  5. Nice to see the Brigade Games zeds and like you all my zeds are individuals - no duplicates here either !(or at least I think so). Great colours too, something I hate having to do - I'm no fashion expert !
Brian is a very unpleasant looking and harmless looking zed, but no doubt thre's a cunning, evilness beneath his appearance - great figure !

    1. Thanks, Joe! I like to give the members of my faceless undead horde a bit of individuality. I'm going to modify the duplicate mini so she doesn't look exactly like her twin. I've got a lot better/faster at selecting clothing colours, it used to take me ages to pick them for some reason. Now I have them set up before I start painting.

Brian is a great sculpt and I'm glad I added him to my order on a whim!

  6. Andrea Blue got her name for her particular brand of standup comedy that is decidedly NOT for children.

Nice additions and yes, you are silly for not painting up the duplicate, afterall, these are just zombies, they don’t care if they are sharing styles or fashions!

    1. Yeah, the duplicate mini is being painted and I've bent her arm a bit to make her look a bit different. I was pretty stupid for not just painting her first time.
