Monster May(hem): Hell Hounds

Oops, wrong photo. Although at times this pair does qualify as hell hounds, especially if a squirrel farts anywhere in the forest outside the house.

Like Hastur, these models are repaints for Monster May(hem). I've owned them since 2019 and this year's challenge is the perfect excuse to finally get them finished.

Here they are, fresh out of storage. I'd got as far as priming them black and painting one red, and just stopped. I'm not sure why. I repainted them both Khorne Red and started layering.

As with the Queen of Hell, it was a case of just slapping on thin coat after thin coat of Mephiston Red, Vermilion and Wild Rider Red to give the impression of red-hot flesh. I used thinned Khorne Red to line in the shading between their muscles.

Their fur, horns and claws are Black. The fur was drybrushed with Khorne Red and the bony bits got a couple of layers of Dark Sea Blue. Their teeth, which aren't too well defined as these are Bones models, were touched up with White and a dot of Yriel Yellow.

Man, these oval bases are really coming in handy. I broke up some more cork tile to make the rocks, glued them on and painted them with black and grey craft paint. The actual bases were again done like the Queen's: just more layering of reds, orange and yellow, a touch of white, and two coats of Casandora Yellow wash.

Here's the queen taking her pups for a walk. Before attaching the hounds to the cork I cut off their integral bases as best I could... it kind of worked.

More monsters to come once the primer's dry and I've done the laundry!

  1. Great work on the hounds Matt, they fit perfectly with the queen, and you've certainly found your stride with the lava bases, they look great and add to the effect of the models.

    1. Thanks, Dave, lava bases have always scared me a bit but they're a lot easier than they look.

Very nice, Matt, both the the real hellhounds and the thankfully-not-real versions! :-)

    1. Cheers, John, although sometimes I think having a pair of hellhounds would be easier than Cadbury and Erebus :-)

  5. The hellhounds look super mate, and really fit the Queen well, though I'd still take the two in the first picture myself (sorry). 😉

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers, Roger, the two in the top photo are currently beating the crap out of each other in the kitchen so don't be surprised if I send them over to you LOL!

  6. The fur on those hell hounds in the top picture is so realistic looking! How did you capture them so well in miniature form? ;) In all seriousness, I love pairing these latest sculpts with your demoness. They make a fierce triad!
