Hans, Post Apocalyptic Survivor

My post-apocalyptic/zombie survivors usually come in groups of four, but Hans is such a badass that I decided to post him on his own. This decision has nothing to do with the fact that I don't have three other survivor figures right now, oh no.

When the zombie apocalypse kicked off, Hans picked up his assault rifle, walked out the door and started shooting. He hasn't stopped since.

Reaper's Hans was ordered from Amazon at the same time as my vampire. For once I have a mini with loads of skin on show and it's not a female. I recently got hold of a pot of Vallejo Heavy Skintone and used that as a base on his flesh (the Vallejo heavy colours are the equivalent of Citadel's base shades). After that I layered on Basic Flesh Tone to lighten his skin but leave him with a decent tan.

As I've recently painted a military mini, albeit a zombie, I didn't want to use green or grey for his combat trousers so I went with Yellow Ochre for more of a desert look. A wash with Soft Tone brought out the creases. His vest is English Uniform, a colour that works well for leather as well as cloth. The blond hair is Gold Brown highlighted with some Sunset Yellow.

Hans' backpack looked crap in black, so I redid it with Heavy Black Green and Olive Green. The rope over his shoulder was going to be painted Khaki until I couldn't find it, so it's Pale Flesh washed with Strong Tone. His belt, holster and water bottle are Chocolate Brown. I dug out my Citadel Blood for the Blood God to daub his bandages.

The base is just filled with tacky glue, left to go a bit hard, sprinkled with some sand and painted Desert Yellow and washed with Strong Tone. A quick drybrush with more Desert Yellow and a touch of Ivory and he was finished.

Hans is a great addition to my post-apocalyptic/zombie survivors and looks like he could take on my entire collection of zombies by himself. He was a good sculpt with very little flash to carve off, which is always a plus in my book.

The photos don't look too good as it's been an unseasonably warm and sunny day here in Vermont, and the bright light made taking the pics a pain. In case anyone's wondering, the blue thing in the background is a dog leash that I didn't notice when taking the photos.

  1. Great looking survivor Matt, like how you've been trying out different colour schemes, so all your models don't end up the same

    1. Thanks, Dave. I do like trying different schemes, although a lot of the time that ends up with me taking ages to come up with one.

  2. Nice work. Looks a lot like Dolph Lundgren! I like the Vallejo skin tones and might have to invest in some. I use Reaper tones pretty much all the time, but I am capable of change.

    1. Cheers. You're right, he does look like Dolph!

I can totally recommend Vallejo flesh tones. You can get a boxed set of them on Amazon.

  3. Very nice work as always Matt, he does have a look of "young" Dolph Lundgren, to get a figure that looks like him these days you would need a mis-cast!

Will have a look at the Vallejo skin tones, as I need some new "fleshy" paint.

    Cheers Roger.
