Empirical Absolution and Liquidation Squad

Nobody expects the Empirical Absolution and Liquidation Squad!

All I can say is: DAMN YOU, FACEBOOK ADS! There I was, happily scrolling through the endless memes and pet photos and suddenly these chaps showed up in an advert for Wargames Foundry. Two minutes later I was $30 poorer ($15 for the minis, $15 for shipping from the UK) but it was well worth it.

Honestly, these chaps are so Oldhammer it hurts. They were sculpted by Bryan Ansell in 1987 and never released by Citadel, which is a HUGE mistake. Combining Judge Dredd, Eldar-esque helmets, Beakie studded shoulder pads and the hallmark 80s Citadel oversized hands and feet, these guys are just awesome, and I finished painting the squad this morning.

Brother Knuckles needs no armour or weapons. His defence is the Word of the Emperor and his attack is a left arm the size of my thigh. Brother Knuckles has never missed arm day at the gym, all the better to carry the Imperial Truth across the galaxy and smash any insolent xenos right in the chops.

After spray-priming all five minis black, I kicked of with Brother Knuckles. His habit got a coat of Chocolate Brown and highlights of Flat Earth, then a wash with Agrax Earthshade to tie it all together. His skin was next, using my own flesh mix shaded with Reikland Fleshshade and highlighted with some Basic Flesh. After that it was just a case of slapping some Khorne and Wazdaka reds on his book, and Violet, Hexed Lichen and Brass on his dagger sheath.

Captain Silth is in charge of this motley band of absolutionists and liquidators. He did once aspire to join the Space Marines but failed the initial test when he spelled his name wrong on the application form.

Silth's black uniform was highlighted with layers of Blue to give it a bit of a sheen, then all the gold areas were basecoated with Filthy Brown before being painted Brass and toned down a bit with some Seraphim Sepia.

His gloves and the weird thing over his front were painted Park Flat Green, shaded with Biel-Tan and highlighted with some Goblin Green to add a yellowish shade. His pistol is Iron Warriors, Plate Metal and some Pink Horror to add a splash of colour.

Trooper Marko didn't get the message about wearing his dress uniform. Oops. I have to admit to being annoyed by this mini; why is there an astronaut in the group? More annoying is that he has a nub on his back that looks like it's supposed to have a backpack of some sort stuck to it. On the other hand he is holding a classic autogun and his helmet saved me having to paint another face.

Marko was painted the same way as Sith, as were all the other figures. His helmet visor is Plate Metal, Silver and some thinned Nuln Oil, and his autogun is Black, highlighted with Neutral Grey.

Trooper Firkin has a weekend gig as a Judge Dredd cosplayer.

The red disc on his right shoulder pad is Khorne Red and Vermilion. A couple of dabs of Silver on his helmet lenses and he was done.

Trooper Wazz has heard of gun safety but doesn't believe in it, hence his tendency to scratch his chin with his bolt pistol.

Wazz was painted the same way as the other Judge wannabees, and to me he's the best sculpt of the bunch. His pose makes me think that he's genuinely wondering if he could get away with shooting you for walking on the cracks in the pavement.

All the models came on flat integral bases WHY? JUST WHY? so I stuck them to 25mm bases and used Black Lava paste to hide where they joined. Once dry, it was painted Violet, washed with Druchii Violet and drybrushed with Hexed Lichen and Blue Violet.

I'm really happy with the way these guys have turned out. They might make for a fun Space Station Zero team if the Muppets meet their demise soon...

Lego Lambo

I kept seeing this Lego Lamborghini Countach in Walmart and last week I gave in and bought it. I haven't made anything Lego for about 11 years, and it was fun to make and pretty easy to put together. There's a few other Lego cars this scale, and next I want to get the Aston Martin DB5.

  1. Great work on all Matt, can easily see the oldhammer and Judge Dredd influences in the sculpts. Marko actually reminds me of an old Rogue Trooper sculpt of the Nort Sniper in his Death Helm, although they just seem to have made his helm larger and more fish bowl like, the original sculpt had a small rebreather pack in the place you say the nub is.

  2. Terrific stuff, Matt, absolutely terrific. Wargames Foundry do some corking minis, imho, and whilst they don't seem to have the clout they used to have many moons ago, they're still one of my fave metal producing companies. Wonderful paintjobs on some wonderful minis.

  4. There can be no replacing The Muppets. I'm getting that petition ready now, haha!! Nice find and your paints did them justice. "Judge Dredd Cosplayer"!! LOL!

  5. Really nice work on these and I can see the Judge Dredd influence too. I think these guys look like someone who would come in and clean up the Muppets messes to be fair :) You probably know but there is a Judge Dredd game by Warlord Games so there's more sculpts like these out there if you're so inclined!

  6. Nicely done mate, I seem to think I had an imperial trooper posed very like "Marko" from waaaaay back in the day. I think he might have provided the base for that figure.

Love the Judge Dredd, look you've given them.

    Cheers Roger.

I must admit I read the first line and immediately followed it up with "Our two main weapons are fear and surprise"! These are brilliant minis, literally and metaphorically! Captain Silith is my favourite and I like the 2000AD look of the troopers! All very nice! :-)

  8. These do look great and I wonder why they were never released. The wannabee Dredd figures are great sculps, much better than the other two.
