Throkk was once three mischievous nurglings who were a pain in Fecalus' abscessed backside.
Thrakk, Thrukk and Thrikk tried to be helpful to their hulking master but always messed up in some way or another. One day, after they dropped a ladle of a potion Fecalus had been working on for five thousand years, the Great Unclean One finally lost patience and flicked them into one of his smaller cauldrons. The trio of jabbering pusbags sank below its bubbling surface and Fecalus got on with remaking his vile creation.
Several millennia later, a clawed hand broke through the scum covering the cauldron's contents. A large three-headed, three-armed creature dragged itself out of the vile broth and Throkk was born. Fecalus, delighted at his new creation, immediately forgave Throkk all his earlier mistakes and put him in charge of a cohort of Plaguebearers.
You're not going to believe this, but Throkk is yet another impulse buy off Etsy. I mean, how could I not? It's a superb model which really captures the whole plague daemon aesthetic and even better, it was pretty cheap. I wrote his backstory in my head as I was painting him.
I kicked off Throkk with two coats of Ork Flesh contrast over black primer. I wanted to use more saturated colours than the usual plague paints, so he was given a heavy overbrush of Black Green and then I settled in to get the highlights done.
I started with drybrushes of Loren Forest, Elysian Green and some Ogryn Camo before washing him all over with Athonian Camoshade to tie the different shades of green together.
Once I was happy with Throkk's skin tones I painted the insides of his mouths and tongues Screamer Pink and washed them with Beserker Bloodshade before adding highlights with Pink Horror and a touch of Pink.
All of Throkk's teeth, claws and horns (and he has so many, many teeth) were basecoated with Chocolate Brown and then painted with Flayed One Flesh. After a wash with Agrax Earthshade I highlighted them with Skeleton Bone and a touch of Off-White.
With just his eyes, boils and base to go, I was on the final stretch. All his eyes were filled with White and then given a couple of layers of Fuegan Orange wash. I used Trollslayer Orange for his irises and then dotted in the pupils with the tip of a paintbrush handle.
The boils are just Beserker Bloodshade with a dot of White on top and a dab of more Fuegan Orange.
His base is the usual cork painted Black, Ork Flesh, Moot Green and Yellow-Green and then slathered with UV resin and some maggots.
Overall I'm really happy with how Throkk turned out. Despite being absolutely non-canon in the Realms of Chaos, he still fits into my Nurgle army and doesn't look out of place.
I knocked up a couple more monsters over the weekend, so stay tuned!
Fantastic piece Matt, and very putrid, and even though it may not be cannon, it looks great, and as GW cannon changes all the time, why worry, enjoy the hobby how ever you want. The base is very fitting for a putrid lord of decay, and love the back story.
ReplyDeleteCheers Dave! I really do think that enjoying yourself should take precedence over sticking to a games company's formula, so I've added a few non-canon daemons to my Nurgle army over the past year.
DeleteI love it when you can find such great models. For me Chaos is just that, the variety in shapes, the total opposite to standard miniatures. This model looks great and you made it stand out! It's scary, nasty and it really gets the Nurgle vibe! Just perfect!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Suber! I generally find these models by chance; Throkk was one that came up in the "you might also like..." section of Etsy, so I just had to buy him. He really has a solid Nurgle look to him and I'm really happy with how he came out.
DeleteChaos is the opposite of uniformity so I am very much a fan of this sculpt and how you are portraying him fluff-wise. The sculpt itself is so flippin cool and your paintjob and colour scheme fit perfectly mate. GOod stuff.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Dai, Chaos should be a mess of different looks and shapes and one thing that annoys me about GW's approach to it is their uniformity. Finding a model that isn't canon but still fits in is always satisfying.
DeleteHe's got an awful lot of teeth for a lesser daemon! :-) Bit of a horror (in a nice way of course)!
ReplyDeleteHe has a shedload of teeth and they were a nightmare to paint LOL!
DeleteHe looks awesome and even if he's not "official" 40K material, there are plenty of other games you in which you could use a model like that. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Keith! He's a great fit for a Nurgle army but would be great as a standalone character too.
DeleteThat is a nasty looking demon and the base might even be fouler yet! I like how you painted this one up and it looks like you've been on a tear with the demonic miniatures as of late too.
ReplyDeleteCheers, Jeff! You would not believe how many daemonic minis I've painted over the past year and I'll have to get them on the blog as soon as I can :-)
