Rhoxx, Plague Dreadnought

Rhoxx was once a sergeant in the ninth company of the Death Guard, a valued and stalwart Astartes of the XIV Legion. Mortally wounded at Istvaan III during the traitor Legions' war on their loyalist members, he was encased in Dreadnought armour to fight on in Horus's crusade against the Emperor.

Millennia of exposure to the gifts of Nurgle and the effects of the Warp have left Rhoxx a mere shadow of the Marine who once wore the marble and white of the Death Guard. Rhoxx is now a gigantic, twisted mass of ceramite and cancerous flesh, held together by little more than undying hatred and 10,000 years of spite.

Anyway, painting. Rhoxx is another buy off Etsy because who doesn't want a massive plague Dreadnought for under $25?

I kicked off with a basecoat of grey primer and then a heavy drybrush of Celestra Grey. After that, I slapped on few coats of the ever-reliable Plaguebearer Flesh contrast to get his armour nice and green.

Once happy with his armour, I hit his fleshy areas with my own flesh mix followed with a slathering of Guilliman Flesh contrast to add shadows. I mixed in some Basic Flesh to my mix to add highlights, trying my best to get something that would look like diseased human skin. I think I pulled it off, it definitely has a yucky look.

Next up was all the trim on the armour. I used Brass, but as it wouldn't cover the green too well I ended up having to base all the raised trim with Mahogany Brown so the Brass would look better. As you can imagine, going over all of that twice was a bundle of fun.

I painted Rhoxx's meaty powerfist with Black Red, Burnt Red and a little bit of Wazdakka Red for the final highlights, and I did the same with his gums. The non-brass areas of metal are all Iron Warriors plastered with a lot of Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil to give it a dirty, worn look. I then painted over all the iron bits with plenty of my own rust wash, cos you can't have Nurgle without rust.

The tube mushrooms on Rhoxx's back (I know they have an actual name, I just can't remember it) were given a couple of coats of Fuegan Orange wash and then a once-over with thinned Agrax Earthshade. I used Hexed Lichen and Genestealer Purple on the tentacles hanging out of his shell, and then I set about his many, many teeth with Bonewhite, Ivory, Off-White and yet more Agrax Earthshade, which is why I own three pots of Agrax Earthshade.

He was pretty much done by now, but I added even more rust wash to certain parts of his armour and then finally used thinned Verdigris on the brass areas. I've never liked the look of Verdigris on brass or bronze but it has to be done, and I've recently watched a tutorial on doing it better.

Like all my other Nurgle models he's based with cork on a 60mm base, painted Black and then drybrushed with White to provide a base for Ork Flesh contrast and Moot Green. I mixed some Green Yellow into a load of ultraviolet resin and dumped it over the base, and then stuck it under Alicia's UV nail drying wotsit for several minutes. I added some maggots and then Rhoxx was glued on.

He did take a while to paint — there are lots of little details that aren't showing up in my awful photos — but he looks just right for a 10,000-year-old insane traitor Space Marine who's pledged allegiance to the God of Decay.

  1. Holy crap Matt, this thing is so cool! Reminds me 100% of the old FW Nurgle dreadnought I used to own for my own Deathguard army. (THough a more modern take.) Very nice addition to the poxy ranks mate.
