Monster May(hem): The Corpse Collector

This is honestly one of the most horrific models I've ever painted, and I've painted a lot of horrific models.

The Corpse Collector was such an obvious buy that I think I paid for it before I actually pressed the "buy now" button. It's a terrific and terrifying model that really sums up how imaginative a lot of 3D artists are, and frankly how far behind the curve Games Workshop is with its creations.

He was pretty easy to paint, which is how I knocked him up over the weekend. I kicked off with a basecoat of German Grey and added some very thinned Nuln Oil to bring out the shadows.

After that, it was pretty much just a case of highlighting him all over with Neutral and Celestra greys until I thought the highlights worked without making him too light.

I painted the wooden box on his back with Chocolate Brown, Mahogany Brown and Burnt Umber, and then I did the human remains stored in it with Flayed One Flesh washed with Athonian Camoshade to make it look nice and rotten. Any bones (and there were lots) were gone over with Skeleton Bone.

His helmet is just Iron Warriors washed with Agrax Earthshade and a touch of thinned-down Nazdreg Yellow, and I used the same paints on the chains. I filled in his helmet's eyeholes with Black Ink.

And we're onto the blood, so much blood. I slathered a ton of Blood For The Blood God over the corpses, box, spikes, shoulders, hands, mouth and upper back. Seriously, I plastered it on with next to no care about making a mess. A makeup brush worked really well for this bit as you want to daub it on, not paint it.

His wounds and the sigil on his chest were filled in with Blood Angels Red contrast and it looks really good. After randomly dotting some more blood over him and a coat of matte varnish, he was done.

His base is just a piece of cork painted to look like rock, glued to a 60mm base. I dumped on a load of Stirland Mud and once it dried I gave it a drybrush with Flat Earth and stuck on a few tufts.

Alicia hates this model, and I have to admit that for once I can't blame her. It really is a thing of nightmares. On the other hand the fact is is a thing of nightmares is what makes it so bloody awesome.

More monsters soon!

  1. Fantastic addition to your army Matt, the whole model has an unnerving feel to it, which makes it the total deal. In my household it's spider models that cause the same reaction ! LOL

  2. I'm not all that appaulled by this sculpt in the least. Looks like something out of Silent Hill or Resident Evil to me. Doesn't take from the fact that it's yet another lovely sculpt that you've added to your collection.
The blood is good, though I feel it could be darkened a little in places perhaps?

    1. You're right, Dai, it does have a Silent Hill look to it. I do find it a very nasty-looking mini, way nastier than any of my Chaos daemons, but at the same time it's such an awesome model I had to get it.

Oh yes, a gruesome one without a doubt! :-) Would fit right into Trench Crusade looking like that! "Nicely done! doesn't seem right for this individual, so maybe "horrifyingly realistic" might be closer to the mark!

    1. Thanks, John! From what I've seen of Trench Crusade's models you're right, it would fit in with them.

  5. This is a gruesome mini but as John points out, its pretty much par for the course in Trench Crusade from what little I know of the game. I like the design of this mini and the mouth is very Mike Mignola-esque. In fact, this guy could walk straight out of the pages of Hellboy, I reckon!

    1. Thanks, Jeff! You're right, although I've never read a Hellboy graphic novel I have seen the movies and this chap would fit right in!
