Monster May(hem): Cheshire Cat

So in the interests of full disclosure, I started this model months ago and finally got around to finishing it over the past couple of days as I realised it would make a great entry for Monster May(hem).

Can you say "impulse buy"? I thought this mini was superb when I spotted it on Etsy, so I just had to buy it. In a way it really sums up my thing about buying models that look cool and will be fun to paint. The same seller also does an evil-looking March Hare and a gothy Alice, so I might pick up those in the future.

Anyway, to kick it off I primed the cat black and gave it a coat of Violet. And that's how it stayed for about five months.

I started the highlights with Royal Purple before moving on to a lighter drybrush with Hexed Lichen. After a wash of Druchii Violer he was looking good but needed to be lighter, so I hit it with some Purple, then Genestealer Purple and finally some Dechala Lilac.

His skin's done, so now it's fun and games with the stripes!

I used White to block out and prime the stripes and then painted them over with Screamer Pink. I had to paint more white in the centres to make a better base for Pink Horror, and then again for the pure Pink. Safe to say, the stripes were a pain in the arse but I think I pulled them off.

With his body done it was onto the details. After blocking in his eyes with White I used Warpstone Glow to give them a nice green look and painted in the pupils with Black.

His teeth, and like so many of my models there are tons of them, were all painted Off-White, washed with Agrax Earthshade and then given a once-over with Nazdreg Yellow and a small amount of Dorn Yellow. His terrifying grin looks amazing.

I dug out an oval base, glued on a couple of small stones and then went over the plastic with Stirland Mud. Once it was dry I drybrushed Flat Earth over it and dumped on a ton of flock mix and some dead leaves. A few tufts and mushrooms and he was finished.

I'm really happy with how the Cheshire Cat came out. Despite my general uselessness at freehanding the stripes worked really well and I'm very pleased with all the teeth.

There's at least one, and maybe two, monsters still to come!

    1. Cheers, Dave! The stripes were my main worry but apart from being a bit of a hassle they were pretty straightforward to do.

  3. That sculpt reminds me of the old "American McGee's Alice" computer game style. (Very dark gothy Alice in Wonderland aesthetic) Very frikken cool.

Love the painting and colours chosen. Disney would not approve. :)

    1. I played American McGee's Alice back in the day and you're not wrong, Dave, this sculpt has a lot of that game's style. I'm happy to annoy the Mouse LOL!

  4. This is a really cool sculpt and its certainly a dark take on Alice in Wonderland. Those teeth in particular are scary! My wife is allergic to and does not like cats so I'm going to run off before she walks by and sees this one haha!
